Frequently Asked Questions.

What is Community Acupuncture?

Community acupuncture is the practice of treating patients with acupuncture together in a large room, rather than individually in private rooms. Community acupuncture allows for more flexible prices while also going back to the roots of how acupuncture was originally practiced.

How does acupuncture work?

Acupuncture points are believed to stimulate the central nervous system. This stimulation is believed to release chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. The biochemical changes that happen with acupuncture may stimulate the body's natural healing abilities thus promoting physical and emotional well-being.

Does acupuncture hurt?

Since acupuncture needles are very thin, most people feel no pain. However, there are a few people who will feel very little pain when the needles are inserted. After the treatment it is possible that needles cause temporary soreness and even light bruising. If you do feel pain after the needles are inserted and while receiving the treatment, let one of our practitioners know as soon as you can.

How many acupuncture needles are used and where do they go?

During a typical acupuncture session, anywhere between 5 to 20 needles are used. Acupuncture needles are inserted in various strategic points and depth in the body depending on what your practitioner decides based on your needs.

Why do I feel some of the acupuncture needles and not others?

Simple, some points are just more sensitive than others! Depending on where the needles are placed you'll feel some points if they're in sensitive areas.

Why do I feel sleepy once the acupuncture needles are in?

Since the purposes of acupuncture is to help your body reestablish harmony and relax, there is a chance that this relaxation translates as sleepiness. Moreover, needles are left in for 20 to 40 minutes which is enough time to take a nap or even fall asleep to the relaxing music in an acupuncture session.

How long does acupuncture take to start working?

Although there is no exact timeline for acupuncture to start working, you should notice some improvements after 2 or 3 acupuncture sessions. Eventually, if you continue with acupuncture treatment consistently you will observe an overall sense of wellness, both physically and mentally.

How often should I get acupuncture?

Since you won't get the full benefits of acupuncture in the first treatments, we recommend starting with appointments once a week. However, everyone's different, so speak with our acupuncturists, they'll recommend a schedule that makes the most sense for you!

How many people do you treat at a time?

We have space to treat 8 to 10 people per session. Of course, every session can be a little different depending on how many people sign up.

Do you sterilize your needles?

At AcuMantras we use single-use sterilized acupuncture needles, so you don't have to worry about what happens to them after they're used.

Can I cancel or reschedule my appointment?

For all scheduled appointments you can cancel and reschedule up to 24 hours before an originally scheduled appointment. No rollover credits can be granted for missed appointments or for class credits not used by end of each month. For community acupuncture appointments all payments are final and will be donated to the nonprofit if not used.
